Have you been wondering how to get more people to like your Facebook business page?

As with any presence on the web, the goal is to get in front of as many eyes as possible.  With Facebook, it’s no different. Of course, you also want to make sure that all those eyes are your right people, but that’s a different article.

Believe it or not, it’s not nearly as difficult to get new Facebook fans (or “likers”) as you might think. Just remember that once they’ve given you permission to interact with them, that you need to have a conversation and dialog with them.

Here are five basic steps that can get you started attracting new fans (likers) to your Facebook business page.

First and foremost, be sure to provide good content.  As they say, “content is king” and in order to claim your expertise and leverage it for various opportunities and clients, you need to demonstrate that you are, indeed, and expert.  So create your own content (videos, audios, ebooks, articles, etc.), but also remember to aggregate other resources and articles that your people will benefit from.

Let people know where to find you.  Add the Facebook widget to your website and your blog. Let people know when they visit your website that you also have a community on Facebook that you regularly participate in.  Also be sure to include your fan page URL on your business cards, your online profiles and in your email signature.

Spread the word with your friends. Don’t be afraid to invite your friends and family to “like” your page.  If you provide good content they will stick around and follow along (you’ll honestly be surprised at how closely they follow along…trust me here).  Also, when you come across a good resource that both your fans and your friends might enjoy, post it first to your business page and then “share” it from there to your personal page.  This gives them a subtle reminder that you have a business page as well.  I have a couple colleagues that also post “do you know that I also have a business page here on Facebook” with a tag for the page status updates from time to time – another good way to convert friends to fans.

Add the “like” or “share on Facebook” buttons to your website.  This is another super simple way to encourage people to share your content, resources and expertise (and there are WordPress plugins for that if you’re on WP).  As I’m sure you know by now, when someone clicks the “like” button from your website, it shows up on their newsfeed to all of their friends.  A great way to effortlessly get in front of new people.

And finally, network, network, network.  Connect with other similar or complimentary businesses on Facebook.  Find your favorite websites and magazine’s Facebook pages.  Then, when you see something great that they shared that you would like to share with your peeps (or something they wrote, or a video or a quote or you name it), tag them.  I’ve found this a great way to help build up my fan-base.  It’s especially rewarding with authors and public figures.
